Linda van Schaik, General Manager Retail Benelux and France, and members of the Shell Eco-marathon team Euregiorunners sound the gong to mark the 30th Shell Eco-marathon which takes place in Rotterdam from May 15-18.

The team used desktop 3D printers to create many of the components of their car, making lighter parts and ultimately saving fuel. (featured: steering wheel, door, dashboard)

This is the 30th year of the Shell Eco-marathon, one of the world’s most challenging student competitions related to innovation, technology and sustainability that is held in Europe, the US and Asia every year. From 15 to 18 May 2014, more than 200 teams from 26 countries in Europe and Africa will again compete to drive the farthest using the least amount of fuel with their home-made vehicles. Teams use the latest technological innovations to make their cars, including one largely built using 3D printers. For the first time in its European history, eighteen Dutch teams participate the challenge. The competition offers future scientists and engineers an educational and experimental platform to apply their knowledge and skills in pursuit of sustainable solutions to global energy issues.
