Data & Ops Manager, Rankings
1. Data and Operations Manager, Rankings
Bangalore · Full-time · UK working hours overlap
1.1About the role
We are building a new analyst rankings product for the equity research industry. The product turns buy-side evaluation data into objective, defensible rankings of sell-side analysts, replacing a long-standing incumbent that the industry has outgrown. We are pre-MVP today, with a public launch planned for later this year, and the team you will join is small, senior, and London-based.
This role leads our Bangalore operations team. You will manage three associates/analysts and own the day-to-day running of the operational engine that produces the rankings, and act as the senior operational point of contact in India.
We are looking for someone who will look at how we currently do things, decide what the best version of the process should be, and build it - with documentation that outlasts any individual. The role will involve communication, curiosity, analytical judgement and leadership.
1.2What you will own
1.2.1Leading the team
- Critically review every operational process you inherit. Decide what the best version looks like, implement it, and document it so a new joiner can run it without you in the room.
- Manage and develop three team members. Set the bar for analytical rigour and follow-through. Coach, review, unblock.
1.2.2Communication
- Hold data-quality conversations with client technical and operations contacts without London supervision: clarifying submitted data, explaining how the rankings are produced in plain language, walking through validation findings, and agreeing remediation steps.
- Communicate findings clearly to the London team and other colleagues - concise written notes, simple visuals, a sharp summary of what changed and why it matters. Interpretation, not data dumps.
1.2.3Operational delivery
- Submission operations: tracking buy-side submissions end-to-end, first-pass validation, flagging missing or implausible inputs, escalating clearly and early.
- Data preparation and scoring: cleaning, normalising and structuring submitted datasets; applying scoring logic; re-running scoring as inputs evolve; producing diagnostics and worked examples.
- Maintain the analyst and firm directory and the rules that govern it: sector and coverage logic, analyst moves, roster locks and transfers.
- Track delivery across the operational pipeline - submissions in flight, processing status, blockers, deadlines and report it cleanly to London on a weekly cadence.
- Keep the data honest: validation, anonymisation and aggregation rules, change logs, and a clear audit trail behind every output.
1.2.4Analytics, insight, and inbound queries
- Interrogate, with the help of your team, the rankings data to find what matters - trends, patterns, outliers, and the stories worth telling - and turn that into clear insight rather than raw output.
- Handle inbound queries about the data and the rankings - from the London team and, where they arise, from clients - investigating quickly, answering accurately, and escalating anything touching methodology or commercial terms to London.
1.3What we are looking for
- 7+ years of experience in data operations, analytics or a closely related analytical operations function.
- A strong communicator. You can explain something complex to a non-specialist without jargon, stay calm and clear when challenged, and disagree - including with senior people - respectfully and without friction.
- Demonstrable track record of taking an inherited process, redesigning it, and producing the documentation that made it survive turnover.
- Strong analytical and data visualisation skills. Excel to a high standard is required; working SQL is required; working Python is a strong plus as are use of BI tools.
- Experience managing a small team of analysts, with evidence of developing people rather than simply allocating work.
- Financial services experience - sell-side, buy-side, market data, index operations, research, or a similar regulated data environment.
- Experience running structured project tracking and reporting for an operational function or delivery team.
- Confidence handling external client conversations on technical and data-quality topics, including with senior counterparties.
- Self-directed working style. You spot gaps, raise them, and close them without being told.
- Comfortable working full UK hours from Bangalore.
