Terugkomst van de ‘charging bull’

Het standbeeld van de ‘charging bull’ is terug op het Beursplein, na een 1,5 jaar durend renovatieproces. De stier werd in juli 2012 in het geheim geplaatst op initiatief van de onlangs overleden Italiaans-Amerikaanse kunstenaar Arturo Di Modica (26 januari 1941 – 19 februari 2021). Het is een verkleinde variant van de ‘charging bull’ die de kunstenaar 23 jaar eerder – eveneens zonder overleg – plaatste voor de ingang van de New York Stock Exchange. De symboliek achter de stier is vandaag de dag nog steeds actueel: Di Modica wilde de boodschap uitdragen naar Europa om positief te blijven, ook tijdens economische crises.
