Ruud Sleenhoff, chairman of the managing board of DACSI, opens the trading day. The Dutch Advisory Committee Securities Infrastructure (DACSI) is a harmonisation working group set up by financial institutions to serve as a forum for harmonising discussions about the Dutch financial market. Ruud Sleenhoff is one of the founders of DACSI.
DACSI recently held a seminar on the clearing of credit default swaps. Trading in these financial products has soared in recent years, and in the current credit crisis it has attracted even more attention from banks, regulators and governments. Not only do these products present a complex range of risks, the settlement of the transactions is also complicated. A number of current initiatives are aimed at improving both risk management and settlement by arranging to have a central counterparty clear the transactions. The seminar organised by DACSI – whose objective is to improve the efficiency of the settlement process for securities transactions – raised awareness of the problem among a broad public and put forward a number of possible solutions during a panel discussion. |

World Health Day. The week of 6 to 12 April is World Health Week, and today is World Health Day. For this occasion, dr. N.S. Klazinga, chairman of the Netherlands Public Health Federation (NPHF), opens the trading day.
2009 marks the sixth anniversary of World Health Week, the purpose of which is to focus media attention on the issue of health by organising a number of activities, under the auspices of the Netherlands Public Health Federation. This year’s World Health Week theme focuses on health and the impact of the financial and economic crisis on society as a whole. Governments have taken steps to limit the impact of the crisis, and a number of parties have stressed that the economic recovery must include measures aimed at sustainable investment and strengthening the knowledge economy. The NPHF wants to highlight the fact that public health should also be included in this picture. The notion that Health equals Wealth is truer than ever before. The NPHF wants to encourage the public to use the week from 6 to 12 April to invest in their own health, and to encourage its members and many other organisations to continue emphasising the need to invest in health, even during the economic downturn. Première Opera Granida. Dani Cuypers and Wim Trompert striking the gong for the première of the ‘opera’ Granida van P.C. Hooft. Granida opens on April 6 in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix.
Granida is a musical play about passion and deeply felt love: two young people, a shepherd and a princess, fight for their happiness. The Ipermestra Foundation brings this early gem of musical theatre (1605) back to the stage. Granida shows that Holland was as much a frontrunner in popular musical theatre as it was in the shipping trade, in painting, and in social tolerance.
Dani Cuypers and Wim Trompert are the founders of the Ipermestra Foundation. Their aim is to realize (musical)theatre productions en connect (musical)theatre and other forms of art, motivated by a cultural or social necessity. P.C. Hooft took his melodies from the international ‘hitparade’ of his time. Timeless themes, musical variety, and an elegant and humorous text - all presented in an up-to-date staging - make of Granida a contemporary opera. With, amongst others, Tania Kross, Jeroen de Vaal, Carol Linssen, and music by La Sfera Armoniosa conducted by Mike Fentross.
Cuypers and Trompert feel there is an urgent need to restore this important but neglected heritage, not only from a historical point of view, but because Granida can be read as a parable for our time. The themes presented in this 17th-century masterpiece are those we struggle with today: the clash of cultures, stemming in large measure from ignorance, and social integration (how best to connect socially isolated groups for the betterment of the whole).
