Since its creation in Reunion Island in 1947, SAPMER has been historically linked to fishing in the French Southern and Antarctic seas (TAAF). Today SAPMER owns and operates 4 55-metre freezer longliners for toothfish and one 76-metre freezer trawler for lobster fishing. SAPMER has also ordered 3 90-metre tuna fishing vessels, equipped with diesel electric propulsion and using a new below 40°c freezing technique. The first of the 3 vessels, the « Franche Terre », was delivered in July 2009.
In order to satisfy changing consumer requirements and a demand for dry frozen tuna, and destined to be consumed in the form of steaks or sashimi, SAPMER has participated, together with a local partner in Mauritius, in the creation of a transformation unit with a capacity of 6 000 tons, Mer des Mascareignes.
SAPMER turnover in 2008 was 35 Million Euros, 90% at export, mainly in Japan and Asia. SAPMER employs 200 people.
Once its new vessels are in operation SAPMER anticipates doubling its turnover by 2012. It has invested in the means to do so, both for fishing vessels and processing plant, so that it can commercialize products that keep their quality and freshness « from sea to plate ».
