Following the great success of the AEX-index weekly and daily options, we now also offer weekly options on some single stocks. These weekly equity options have the same contract specifications as standard options, the only differences are their lifetime and the series introduction policy.

Due to their brief lifetime, weekly and daily options have less time value. This keeps the option premium down relative to a similar option with a longer time to expiry, so the options offer extra leverage; just a small movement in the underlying value can generate an attractive return. Thanks to their design, weekly and daily options are particularly suitable for short-term investment strategies based on current events that could affect the level of the underlying value.

Before you write or purchase options it is vital that you are aware of the risks involved. If you buy options, the maximum loss you can incur is the amount you invested in the options. If you write naked options, it is possible to accumulate major losses.

Weekly options on single stocks

The name and symbol of the option indicate whether it is a standard or weekly option. All the other characteristics of the contract remain the same. The trading symbol of single stock weekly options always start with a number, which indicates the expiry Friday of the month (1, 2, 4 or 5), followed by two characters. There is no separate weekly option class expiring on the third Friday of the month, as the week leading up to that day is the last week of trading in the monthly options expiring that month.

The option contracts are listed via seperate trading symbols as per the table below:

The name and symbol of the option indicate whether it is a standard, weekly or daily option. All the other characteristics of the contract remain the same.

On the last trading day of expiring series, trading is possible until 16:00 CET. The series are settled against the EDSP (Exchange Delivery Settlement Price) which is calculated between 15:30 and 16:00 CET

AEX-index weekly options
The trading symbol of weekly options always start with AX, followed by a number which indicates the Friday of the expiry month, so either 1, 2, 4 or 5. There is no separate AEX weekly option class expiring on the third Friday of the month, as the week leading up to that day is the last week of trading in the AEX monthly options expiring that month.

AEX-index daily options

The Dailies are listed on the business day prior to the expiry day, so the initial lifetime of daily options is two business days. The listing and expiry days are shown in the table below. There is no daily option class expiring on Friday because there are already weekly or monthly options expiring on Friday.

Daily options with an expiry on a non-business day or on a day that the exchange closes early will not be listed.  When weekly or monthly AEX options expire on a non-business day or on a day that the exchange closes early, the last trading day will be changed to the preceding business day.

The trading symbol for daily options consists of the letter "A" plus the day number of the month on which the option expires. The trading symbol is therefore directly linked to the date on which the option expires, so the trading symbol shows which daily option expires on which trading day. For example, the daily option that expires on Wednesday 6 February has the trading symbol "A6" and is available for trading as from Tuesday 5 February.
